Building a Blog Strategy in Hospitality

from Jason Price et Max Starkov

The ease and ubiquity of blogs and their application in hotel marketing deserves a closer look. Must we act on such bold statements as “blogs are the future” and “a blog is a marketing must”? Also, what are the implications for blogs in hospitality? Should creating a blog become part of your own hotel marketing mix? Does hospitality require a different blog strategy than in other verticals? Are there alternatives to blogs? Can a blog help you differentiate your services and de-commoditize your product? What role does a blog serve if at all and what are the pros and cons of developing a blog strategy? The ideas discussed in this article could help hoteliers conceptualize the creation of a blog strategy.

Travel Professionals, how can RSS help your organization ?

medium_rss.3.jpgmedium_rss2.3.jpgDuring your internet surf, those logos may have retained your attention. They actually imply that the site you have been through generate an RSS feed.
Those signs are showing more and more presence on the web pages, tomorrow they will be everywhere and totally democratised since they imply a revolution, a new way to access the information on the web. More precisely, they offer you the opportunity to manage the information and the communication.

This support drastically changes our way to access the news. RSS enable you to pull the information toward you. It’s a clever and customized access to the information. Every single web surfer, depending on his expectations and interests can customize his quest for information: It’s the “information à la carte”.

But what is RSS ?
The term RSS stands for “Real Simple Syndication”. It indicates the automatic and instantaneous export of contents from one site to another (content syndication).

Subscribe to a magazine or a journal and you’ll receive it in your mail box. The RSS feed offers you the same principle. You directly subscribe to a web site which informs you of its last update. The RSS feed become your subscription and the RSS reader will be your filtering mailbox. (the application is installed by default on some navigators such as Firefox).

10 good reasons to have an RSS feed for your company's marketing ? *

  1. RSS enable you to deliver instantaneously your content structured for RSS readers/aggregators. Your content (advertising, commercials, press releases...) can be delivered in Picture, text or video format.

  2. RSS feeds entice users of the feeds to visit the the websites mentioned in the feed, much like the links in an eNewsletter.

  3. RSS feeds complement eNewsletters by delivering content directly to readers, without having to bypass SPAM filters, etc. Content, if formatted correctly, will always be delivered to the RSS reader.

  4. RSS content does not have to compete with email and SPAM for the users' attention. It's more likely that your message delivered via RSS will get through to the users.

  5. RSS feeds work well for search engine positioning, since feeds help get inbound links from other websites. Feeds are also an excellent way to let the search engines know that there is new content to be indexed. If you are a professional of the tourism industry, your feed will be indexed by boardinGate, but also by Generalists search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Msn, Technorati, Feedster, etc,..

  6. Setting up a basic RSS feed is simple and cost-effective.

  7. To feed an RSS flow is very simple. You can o it by simply sending an e-mail.

  8. RSS feeds can be used to syndicate content to other websites, thereby expanding the original site's readership and reach.

  9. RSS is becoming more well known as a content delivery method, especially with Yahoo's! implementation of RSS aggregation in their MyYahoo! Service.

  10. Many RSS readers allow the users to forward the items in RSS feeds to their friends, family and co-workers, much like the viral marketing "forward this message" feature in eNewsletters.

Do you see others uses ?

All this advantages lead to only one message :

TRAVEL PROFESSIONNALS, SYNDICATE YOUR SITE !

Tourism is an area where the access to the information is essential because a happy traveller is a well informed traveller. RSS will contribute to the fact that everyone will be more well informed before, during and after their travel, so syndicate your site !

Starwood blog's : TheLobby.com

Starwood presented their new blog, TheLobby.com today. It's definetely a new step in their web 2.0 strategy ( the existing RSS feeds from each of the Starwood hotel chains are very nicely done. )

medium_logo.2.jpg

The blog within the travel industry represents an excellent communication tool. It's a new client relationship marketing. Hotelmarketing.com even talk about "emotionnal connection" and "sense of belonging" when they talk about Starwood Preferred Guest program.

On the same subject, Claude told us recently about a very interesting study on the blog's potential within the hospitality industry : "Building a Blog Strategy in Hospitality".

Another RSS feed to add to boardinGate's base !

UPDATE : see also Thomson blog's who already adpoted RSS feeds ( more information here )

Podcast & Tourisme

Travel & podcasts

medium_mic.2.jpgFew months ago, we spoke about Galveston.com's podcast and it seems that the phenomenon of podcasting is growing up within the travel sector.

Few examples :

-Virgin proposes some podcasts by destination

-Disney is podcasting as well

-EUROSTAR has launched is podcast with Skynet.be in september

-with the Lonely Planet travelcast, you'll be able to listen to conversations with Lonely Planet authors on the road

Travel & blogs

Blogs are relevant promotional support to discover a destination : see Newyorkology.com, a blog dedicated to the Big Apple (via Claude ); blogs can be used as well to present an activity and to develop the customer relation : Tsarabanjina's blog is a very good example. If you visit them, you take the risk to win one week on a private island !

We end up this post with a sentence found in a study about corporate blogging published by Edelman ( available here ) :

If you know some blogs or podcasts about travel, do not hesitate to leave a comment !
